The Year of the Wood Snake begins on January 29, 2025 (Lunar New Year). The Snake, one of the twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac, represents wisdom, transformation, creativity, intuition and mystery. In many cultures, as I learned through training in shamanic energy medicine, the snake, which sheds its skin, is a symbol of transformation through death, rebirth and renewal. The wood element is associated with growth and flexibility. Think of bamboo growing skyward and bending in the wind.
The Chinese Zodiac bears some superficial similarities with Western Astrology. But it is not based on the planetary positions. Lunar New Year falls on the second new moon after the Winter Solstice. As with all new moons, Lunar New Year marks the beginning of a cycle and is a perfect time to set intentions.
The Wood Snake year ahead is the year to break free from the past and to focus on what you are creating.
Break free from the past. Let go of what is played out and no longer life-giving—including old pain, relationships and tired stories that you may be carrying—making space for something new. Transform stale to fresh and wounds to wisdom. What have you learned from challenging or painful experience in the past year (or more distant past)? Take that learning with you. Let go of the story and emotional residue. Who are you without that identity? Embody that. Be the expression of that ideal, archetype or symbol on the energetic level. If you need support with that, reach out.
“In order to glide beyond that place which has become safe but nonproductive,
become Snake. Release the outer skin of your present identity.
Move through the dreamlike illusion that has insisted on static continuity,
and find a new rhythm as your body glides across the sands of consciousness,
like a river winding its way toward the great waters of the sea.”
—from Medicine Cards by Jamie Sams and David Carson.
Focus on what you are creating. We are all creative. We are all creators. Take time to reflect on this. Whatever you give your attention to grows. Prioritize giving attention to what matters to you and brings you joy. What are you giving your attention to? What are you focusing on? What are you nurturing? What are you creating? What energy are you offering?
Happy Lunar New Year of the Wood Snake! May it be a year of inspired creativity, deep transformation, personal growth and renewal for you.
